The primary objective of this thesis is to examine the process of the oral transmission of proverbs. The specific goal is to establish the current state of Salvadorian folklore through the use of proverbs. This study explores the paremiological connections between Iberian Spanish of the XVI century and todays Central American Spanish. The corpus of proverbs contained in Cervantes renowned masterpiece Don Quijote de la Mancha will serve as a basis to compare both periods: todays and that of four-hundred years ago. Two-hundred and fifty-five Salvadorians participated in a survey to corroborate their familiarity with the proverbs in Don Quijote . The results of the survey proved that Salvadorians identify themselves as a society that uses Spanish language proverbs, and that many of the proverbs they currently employ in their natural parlance are registered in Don Quijote.
